The Force Awakens review

Posted : 9 years ago on 26 December 2015 08:52 (A review of The Force Awakens)

MINIMUM SPOILER ALERT

As a movie in its own right, it is not good at all. Perhaps it is just me, perhaps this is modern movie making for a Vine generation, where characters don't have time to be fully developed and motivations do not need to make sense, as attention spans simply aren't long enough. But for a mature viewer, such as myself, the film had three major faults. Firstly it is as if someone had asked all Star Wars fans 'What is your favourite clip' and that is what you are now watching, a well linked clip show of all your favourite bits. You liked the rebel leader putting data into a droid before being captured? Done. Liked when the droids argued about which way to go? Done, but we'll make one human so it's not too similar. Who is your favourite character? Boba Fett?! Right, we'll cram in a cool looking character, with very little dialogue, short screen time and give them a similar ending. You liked how the Jawas captured the Droids? We'll have a droid captured for you. And so it continues thought-out the entire movie. It even goes as far as backgrounds, there is sand [A New Hope], snow [Empire Strikes Back], space station [Star Wars/Return of the Jedi] and forest [Return of the Jedi], just like the best locations in all the first three Star Wars movies. Then there is poor character development, take the story of Finn, one of the lead characters. He is a stormtrooper who doesn't want to kill, and the death of his fellow Stormtrooper moves him to get as far away from the fighting as possible, so how does he escape? By killing all those those fellow Stormtroopers he grew-up with, trained with and probably knew very well. The ending of the movie is also equally disappointing, simply a Sir David Attenborough film about wild birds on Skellig Michael, in Ireland. I think they turned the voice-levels off so that all speech is inaudible, but you can still imagine Sir David's voice whispering about the nesting habits of the birds here. And that is how it ends, setting up a long series of Star Wars movies to come.

BioLite CampStove review

Compact stove, with its own power station, this brings wood burning into the modern age. Fitted with a USB port, you can charge your device whilst your dinner cooks. Dishwasher safe and easy to maintain.

Cassette Tape review

Posted : 11 years, 1 month ago on 13 November 2013 10:54 (A review of Cassette Tape)

Low quality, easy to destroy, but this was Spotify before sharing music online was possible. Make a mixtape for someone was not easy and very time consuming - showed you loved them. Ah memories. Now where did I put that pencil, I need to rewind.

Repo Men review

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 17 June 2012 09:21 (A review of Repo Men)

The idea that you are your job and changing your job changes you is interesting and this was a clever film, but if you've ever seen Brazil, then you'll spot that the storyline was a straight ripoff. Which for me let the whole movie and its ending down greatly. If you haven't seen Brazil then you'll hopefully enjoy this movie even more.

Going nowhere

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 January 2011 07:36 (A review of Come Fly with Me)

I loved Little Britain and highly rate both David & Matt, but I really don't like this show. For anyone who has watched Airport, Airline or any of the host of fly-on-the-wall reality shows about life in an airport, the characters are nothing new, just caricatures of already outlandish/odd people. The only reason to watch it at all is Omar Baba, who's attempts to squeese every last penny out of travelers pockets, yet be seen to offer cheap travel, is both funny and true. Sadly the rest of the show could have been created in the seventies for its lack of inteligent humour and wit.

The Holy Bible: King James Version review

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 3 November 2010 07:18 (A review of The Holy Bible: King James Version)

If counted as a single book, the Bible is one of the best-selling publications in history. But the fact that there are so many versions reduces its impact and makes for a lot of arguments between fans. If you thought the Kirk vs Picard debate was bad, try religion. Christian Bibles alone range from the 66 books of the Protestant canon to the 81 books in the Ethiopian Orthodox Bible. However this version is one of the best and most widely accepted, so if you are going to dip your toe in, to see what the fuss is about, this is perhaps the best one to start with.

Labyrinth review

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 3 October 2010 09:24 (A review of Labyrinth)

Labyrinth is a computer sim version of the classic wooden puzzle game that you may have played as a child.

The game is very simple, you have to guide a metal ball through a maze with plenty of holes dotted around for you to carefully avoid. This electronic version times you, so youโ€™re trying not just trying to get to the final hole, but also beat the clock. Thereโ€™s no time penalty for falling in the hole besides the time that youโ€™ve wasted getting that far and not making it to the end.

The control is perfect and natural, it feels like a real ball in your phone which you are tilting back and forth.

Unfortunately, the version I had was the free Beta version, as always there is also a paid version with many more levels, but as with most childhood toys, whilst I enjoyed the blast from the past, I won't be spending my hard earned cash on this title.

Hungry Shark review

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 3 October 2010 09:15 (A review of Hungry Shark)

Did you ever watch Jaws and wish the shark won? Then this game is for you, almost an adult remake of Eco the Dolphin, this game puts you in control of a great white shark. Not played as a sim, this arcade game sees you chomp your way through fish, birds, swimmers and anything foolish enough to go near the water. There are of course hazards to avoid, these include mines! Aside from the gore and lack of realism, the controls are simple, tilting the phone the direction you wish to travel, eating everything in your path. Fun, but not a game I'd wish to let my kids see.

Bring out Big Bird

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 23 September 2010 10:43 (A review of Angry Birds)

The full version is now available free for Android users. Angry Birds is a very simple game, but as with all good games the devil is in the detail. Use a catapult to throw birds with unique powers against a range of egg stealing pigs in a variety of fortresses. Adjust the birds trajectory for maximum impact/damadge. The challenge is to compete the task of ridding the planet of Pigs in as few birds as possible. This challenging physics-based gameplay requires a bit of logic, skill, and luck to crush the enemy. Highly addictive and the No.1 game download in most countries for a very good reason.

Pacman review

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 23 September 2010 10:33 (A review of Pacman)

Everyone of a certain age has played PAC-MAN. Its a world famous arcade classic and this version is as true to the original as possible. Race round the maze eating got and gobbling up fruit for bonus points, just don't let those ghosts catch you! Control is the usual tilt method or via Trackball. Highly recommended for old school gamers, this is a classic for a reason and can still delight gamers young and old.
